When I start up emacs in shell, I got this error message:

Error in init file: Symbol's function definition is void: global-linum-mode

But my config file works fine with Aquamacs.

It turns out the stock emacs that comes with OSX is version 22.1.1. If I switch to emacs from brew, which is of version GNU Emacs 24.2.1, the error message goes away.
